Dr. James Miller, U.S. Swim Team Physician

Our very own Dr. Miller has been a national team physician for USA swimming since 1996. We are so proud to have him represent Family Practice Specialists of Richmond at the Summer Olympics in London 2012. Recently, Dr. Miller has been featured in two publications about caring for Olympic athletes at this year’s games.

The Richmond Navigator interviewed him on advocating for Olympic athletes. One thing that makes Dr. Miller stand out is that he is the ONLY American of eight physicians to be on the Sports Medicine Committee for FINA, the international governing body for all of the aquatic games. His duties and responsibilities as a physician for the U.S. Swim Team will include making sure all health care systems are in place, ensuring athletes have access to the best emergency care facility, and making sure as part of FINA that these games are a drug free environment in accordance with WADA regulations, (world anti-doping association.) With physicians like Dr. Miller, our U.S. athletes are in good hands.

The Richmond Times Dispatch wrote a piece on him about serving as a physician at the Olympics. He is quoted as saying, “To be able to contribute at the Olympic level is quite an extraordinary experience.” “To be associated with the caliber of physicians and do the things we do internationally is quite an honor.” Dr. Miller noted that one unique benefit to being a physician at the Olympics is observing different kinds of health care practices from around the world. “This experience carries over into my medical practice in Richmond, giving me a unique background to enhance my day-to-day care of athletes or simply active and motivated children, adolescents and adults,” he said.

While at the Olympics Dr. Miller has relayed a great story from one of the U.S. Swim Team races. Nathan Adrian, who won the Olympic Gold Medal in 100 freestyle by 0.03 seconds, was likely the most surprised person in the place. Dr. Miller tells us, “He finished, looked at the scoreboard began to celebrate by pumping his fist, etc.  He then thought….wait, maybe I saw that wrong and stopped thinking that he was making a fool of himself on International TV.  He confirmed his win and then began the celebration all over again.  Great story and an incredible smile.“ That’s what the Olympic games are all about. Dr. Miller will be working in London until the closing ceremonies. We are rooting for our U.S. athletes and excited to have one of our family doctors at the Olympics. We’re looking forward to hearing more stories when he returns.

Welcome Dr. Emily Bush!

Dr. Bush is originally from Mechanicsville, Virginia. She received her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and her medical degree from the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She did her family medicine training in Charleston, SC at the Medical University of South Carolina where she gained extensive experience in outpatient, adult and pediatric medicine, urgent care, and inpatient hospital medicine including ICU care. Her medical training included a focus in women’s health where she gained additional training in well woman care, colposcopies, and contraception. Her professional interests include women’s health and cosmetics.

Her personal interests include exercising and attending fitness classes, learning to cook, traveling, cheering on the Hokies during football season, and spending time with her husband, Brian, and their two dogs. She is very excited to be returning to the Richmond area and joining Family Practice Specialists of Richmond on August 1st.
